The TLM 103 * is a large diaphragm microphone ideal for all professional and semi-professional applications requiring excellent audio quality at a low budget. Using the transformerless output circuit already proven on many Neumann microphone models, the TLM 103 ensures an extremely low clean background noise level and has an extremely high maximum allowable sound pressure level. Its capsule, derived from the one used on the U 87 model, is cardioid in directivity, has a very balanced sound and provides excellent attenuation of signals coming from the rear. The TLM 103 is available in satin nickel and matte black finishes. It comes with an SG 1 metal joint and a wooden box. Applications Thanks to a universal cardioid directivity, easy handling, extremely low background noise levels and a very reasonable price, the TLM 103 is predestined for all demanding applications, from home studio recording to professional productions, in broadcast as in commercial studio.

Directivity The TLM 103 is equipped with a large diameter capsule with cardioid directivity. This directivity – used in most recording situations – provides optimized attenuation of unwanted sounds coming from behind. Off-axis sounds benefit from a great naturalness, while the isolation is improved. Another advantage: a very effective feedback suppression if you use the microphone in concert or at the same time as a sound system by speakers. Acoustic features The TLM 103 is a front-impact microphone – the red Neumann logo attached to the body should face the sound source. The K 103 large diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87 model, known for its use on the U 67 / U 87 models. It has a flat response curve up to approximately 5 kHz; it then presents a large presence bump, of 4 dB maximum. The metal grid protects the capsule from plosives and effectively avoids percussion noises.

These characteristics are obtained without resorting to corrective resonance effects. Consequence: the microphone has an excellent impulse response and reproduces the finest details without any coloration, on voice as on music. Electrical characteristics Thanks to an extremely low level of clean background noise (only 7 dB (A), 17.5 dB CCIR), the TLM 103 reproduces the weakest signals without hiss. Since it is also capable of withstanding sound pressure levels up to 138 dB SPL without distortion, the TLM 103 offers a dynamic range of 131 dB (A-weighted). The letters TLM are an abbreviation for “TransformerLess Microphone”.

TLM technology replaces the usual output transformer with an electronic circuit. Like traditional transformers, this circuit ensures efficient rejection of the common mode, and avoids radio interference which can pollute the balanced audio signal. Safety and reliability All internal microphone modules are flexible mounted, in order to attenuate any noise transmitted by the structure, which could interfere with the use of the TLM 103. In addition, the capsule is mounted on an elastic device. The frequency response extends below 20 Hz, allowing very low-pitched signals to be reproduced without any coloration. By its wide response in the bass, the TLM 103 is more sensitive to vibrations transmitted by structural means and to air noises. If necessary, use the EA 1 elastic suspension and the optional WS 87 windshield. For use in proximity (singing), the PS 15 or PS 20 a pop screens are recommended. * The design of this microphone is registered by Georg Neumann GmbH in some countries.
